Purposes

The Child Language Committee of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics defines language as including listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as comprehension and production through all modalities. The Committee focuses on research and clinical/educational practice dealing with those at risk for or that exhibit spoken and written language difficulties. An additional focus of the committee includes normal bases of language/literacy acquisition, and implications of language/literacy disorders on child development and educational outcomes..

 

The charge to the Committee shall be:

1. To solicit manuscripts on topics on language acquisition and disorders for review and possible publication in Folia Phoniatrica et Logopaedica.

2. To be active in research related to language acquisition and its disorders across special populations (e.g., those with cognitive, hearing or visual impairments, language learning disabilities or with specific language impairment) within a range of social and institutional settings.

3. To coordinate and exchange information regarding prevention, policy making, service delivery, programmatic planning and evaluation from an international perspective.

4. To serve as a resource in the development of programs or presentations at the triennial Congresses of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics, as well as at appropriate satellite meetings.

5. To facilitate at the request of affiliated societies, workshops or continuing education opportunities in the areas of the Committee’s stated interests.

6. To interface with other international committees with similar or overlapping interests, e.g., Augmentative Systems, Education Committee of the IALP, the Multicultural Committee and also with such external associations as the International Association for the Study of Child Language, the International Association of Applied Psycholinguistics, as well as the International Society of Augmentative/Adaptive Systems.

7. To make a Progress Report annually of the activities of the Committee to the Board of IALP.

8. To make a Summary Report to the Board of the IALP at the time of each International Congress of the IALP.

  • Acquired five new members, which were approved in November 2010.

  • Global literacies across the life span
  • How policies and cultures influence practices

 

Future plans

  • Hold a Composium in the near future.
  • In 2012, committee members are planning to  make presentations at the University of Tel Aviv.
  • Discussing the possibilities of developing an issue of Folia focused on assessment and intervention issues related to spoken and written language.
  • Preparing presentations for the next IALP World Congress in Torino, Italy in 2013.

 

International challenges

  • Fostering children and adolescents to participate in the literate community of a multicultural world.
  • Creating knowledge about effective interventions for language/literacy outcomes across nations.
