Purposes
The dysphagia committee is designed to:
1. expand international knowledge regarding normal and abnormal swallowing and evaluation and treatment of swallowing disorders around the world;
2. communicate best care guidelines for dypshagia in various settings;
3. educate phoniatricians and phoniatrists and speech-language pathologists about the best care for dysphagic patients.
Recent Achievements
The IALP Dysphagia Committee held a highly successful day-long seminar in Goteborg, Sweden, in 1999. Other such seminars are being planned.
We have also obtained a contract from Pro-Ed Publishers for a book on Dysphagia: International Perspectives on Evaluation and Treatment.
The Committee has also organized presentations at the last two IALP Congresses, one of which focused on Evidence for Evaluation and Treatment of Dysphagic Patients, the other on Assessment and Treatment of Dysphagic Patients.
Future Plans
In 2006 the Committee began to develop International Guidelines for the Care of Dysphagic Patients with emphasis on the role of the phoniatrician, phoniatrist, and speech-language pathologist.
