Purposes
The committee aims to promote interest in communication disorders in bilingual / multilingual populations by having special sessions at the IALP Congress, carrying out surveys, encouraging research and organizing meetings.
Previous achievements
The first symposium on Communication Disorders in Bilingual Populations was held in Israel in 1995.The second symposium was held in South Africa in 2000 and a special issue of Folio Phoniatrica was published with papers from the Symposium. A 3rd International Symposium on Communication Disorders in Multilingual Populations was held in Cyprus in 2009
An international survey was carried out on languages used in therapy with bilingual children and Recommendations for therapists have been distributed and are available on the website
Current topics of discussion
At present the committee is revising the above recommendations and preparing FAQs for the website.
International challenges
To establish contacts internationally with SLT’s working in bilingual populations in order to share information and ideas.
Future Plans and Challenges
The Committee plans to have a special session at the next congress which will be held in Torino,Italy in 2013. A fourth international symposium will be organized at some future date.
