Prof. Dr. P. Helbert Damté, a major figure of Phoniatrics in the XXth century, passed away on February 3d 2017. Born in Bandung on January 30th 1925, he founded the Institute of Phoniatrics at the Utrecht university in 1959 and became the first professor of Phoniatrics in the Netherlands. He was also a guest professor at the university of Leuven (Belgium). Very active in IALP and UEP circles, he authored numerous publications and several books, particularly on voice pathology and stuttering. He was a thoughtful and highly cultured person. The Dutch Society of Logopedics and Phoniatrics awarded him the title of Member of Honour, and he was invested as Officer of the Order of Oranje-Nassau (The Netherlands) and as Officer of the Crown Order (Belgium).
